Walkerville welcomes hodge podge

Fans of vintage style will be delighted to discover hodge podge, Walkerville’s newest retail gem and a perfect addition to the neighbourhood. Owners Pat Robitaille and Brittany Primeau – both Windsor natives – bring a funky, fresh and fun flavour to the space with their unique mix of vintage and retro pieces. Located at 548 Chilver Road, the shop is refreshingly minimalist in design and reminiscent of Toronto-style shops. “We like to let our pieces speak for themselves,” said Robitaille. “Each one is carefully chosen and restored or refinished. We use a local upholsterer and one of our couches actually has webbing made from seatbelts!”

Hodge Podge

Pat Robitalle, co-owner of hodge podge, stands outside of his Walkerville shop.

The shop currently features an eclectic mix of products including Nike and other apparel, sunglasses and accessories, musical instruments, furniture, artwork, vintage vinyl, and even children’s toys. Determined to work with local suppliers, Robitaille is proud to feature items that are made in Windsor and the surrounding area. “Available exclusively at hodge podge are retro furniture pieces from Excentrix and Maddox watches. Also featured are the artwork of Kevin Kavanaugh and unique knits from Master Knitter Julie Meloche. We are looking for more and are putting out the call for local artisans and craftspeople; if it’s made in Windsor and has vintage/retro appeal we want to see it!”

Excentrix Furniture

Retro seating options from Excentrix (a Windsor-based company) are part of Hodge Podge's offerings.

Combining retail with creativity is something both Robitaille and Primeau have always wanted to explore. “Having lived in Collingwood, Stratford and Toronto the timing just felt right to return to Windsor. The vibe in Walkerville suits us perfectly and we’re hoping to bring something new to the mix.”

From the sneak peek that I was treated to I’d say mission accomplished!

hodge podge opens to the public today, March 7, at 11 a.m.

Hand-built over the course of eight painstaking months by a small crew at XcentricK AutoSports, a candy apple red 1934 Ford replica has been judged the most appealing car in Canada.

More than 190 vehicles vied for placement on paint company PPG Industries' 2012 calendar and the Windsor-built car received 76 per cent of first-place votes. It earned not only the cover but placements on a monthly page, as well as the inside and outside of the calendar's back cover.

The vehicle was entered in the contest by The Fox Company, XcentricK's paint supplier.

"We're very excited about the recognition because it proves that this kind of work can be done by small shops in places such as Windsor," said Chris Darmon, who operates the shop with sister Jessie and father Bill.

The vehicle, which hardly ever leaves the shop on Highway 3, was built for ...
